Tennis enthusiasts in Pasco County can now celebrate because the New Port Richey Recreation Center opened its four newly resurfaced tennis courts to the public on Oct. 7. Mayor of New Port Richey, Scott McPherson, attended a ribbon cutting ceremony in the morning to show support for the grand opening of the new tennis courts.
The women’s team from Pensacola, Fla., representing the USTA Florida Section, finished second at the USTA League presented by Chrysler 2.5 Adult National Championships held at the Amanda & Stacy Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
The new State of Florida Tennis License plate was formally accepted at a meeting of the Florida Cabinet on Sept. 30, 2008 at the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee. Governor Charlie Crist, Attorney General Bill McCollum, and Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, unanimously approved the Florida Tennis specialty license plate, which becomes the first tennis license plate in the state of Florida!
Two days of sunshine greeted almost 90 players from 5 different schools at the first USTA Florida’s College Championship Series event for 08/09, "The Capital Challenge," hosted by Florida State University at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
Team Florida retained the traveling trophy during the 11th annual GA/FL USTA Jr. Team Tennis Challenge. Team Florida outscored Team Georgia by 146 points and won 4 out of 7 draws at the team tennis tournament held on the University of North Florida and Florida Community College campuses in Jacksonville. This win gave Team Florida its fourth Challenge title over their cross-state rivals.
USTA Florida attended Florida Recreation & Park Association’s (FRPA) Annual State Conference, Aug. 26-27, at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista. The conference gave USTA Florida an opportunity to educate attendees about QuickStart Tennis and share its services with park and recreation agencies during the 2008 Exhibit Hall.
This year marked the 60th year of the 2008 USTA Florida State Doubles Championships, which took place Sept. 27-29 at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach Tennis Center. Junior players matched up and played doubles in BG 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s, 18s and mixed divisions. Rachel Thomas, president of the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) tennis club, with support of fellow tennis club officers, promoted, organized and hosted the Second Annual Tennis Club Social at the FGCU tennis courts in Ft. Myers, Oct. 2 from 6-9 p.m. The social was held to support the tennis club and get students excited about playing College Team Tennis.
