Florida's Dailey Wins 2 Gold Balls at USTA Senior National Tennis Chps.

Delray Beach's Mary Dailey teamed with Austin, Tex., resident Michelle King to win the Women's 35 Doubles title during the USTA Senior National Women's 35,45,55,65,75&85 Hard Court Championships, held Sept. 14-20, 2009, at the Chamisal Tennis Club in Salinas, Calif. Dailey then teamed with Oakland, Calif., resident Erika Smith to win the Women's 45 Doubles title, likewise not dropping a set as the top seeds.

Florida's Clevelands Win 3rd USTA National Father-Son Grass Courts Tennis

Florida's Van Nostrand, Meyerdierks Win Gold Balls at National 75-80 Claycourts

Top-seeded King Van Nostrand of Vero Beach, Fla., brought home a gold ball as the singles champion in the Men's 75s division at the USTA National Men's 75 & 80 Clay Court Championships, held Aug. 24-30, 2009, in Virginia Beach, Va. Van Nostrand failed to drop more than one game in any set en route to the championship match, defeating No. 5 seed Gordon Hammes of Durham, N.C., 6-1, 6-1 in the final.

Jacksonville, Orlando, Miami Multiple Winners at USTA Florida Adult League State Chps.

Jacksonville cleaned up with three teams advancing to the USTA League National Championships in October, and Orlando and South Miami-Dade each advanced two teams on Aug. 7-9 during the USTA Florida Adult League State Championships at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. Broward County, Ocala, Pensacola and Sarasota also each advanced one team to nationals.

Florida Flex League Tennis Growing; New Cities Announced

Approximately 700 Floridians are playing league tennis on their own terms less than six months since Flex League became part of the USTA Florida Leagues umbrella. The Flex League, which includes singles and doubles play, allows competitors to schedule their own matches within a 6-8 week period season.

The 2009 USTA Florida Section/State Adult League Championships begin this Friday, Aug. 7, and will conclude on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach. Women's 2.5 to 4.5 teams, and men's 2.5 to 5.0-level regional winners from throughout Florida will compete for the right to represent Florida at the USTA League National Championships, held at sites in Indian Wells, Calif.; Tucson, Ariz.; and Las Vegas, Nev.

Florida players reached finals in four of the six active age divisions, and won four titles overall on July 20-26, 2009, at the USTA National Women's 30,40,50,60,70,80&90 Grass Court Championships held at the former site of the US Open, the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, New York. Trish Riddell of Maitland swept the singles and doubles titles in the Women's 30 division, while Louise Russ of Boca Raton did likewise in the Women's 80 division.

Florida Tennis Pioneer Reed Passes at Age 76

Florida lost a life-long, comprehensive friend of tennis on July 25, 2009, when Nancy Reed of Winter Park passed away peacefully in the presence of family and friends after battling an aggressive form of cancer at age 76. It is not uncommon for an individual from Florida to find great success on the international tennis stage, or to make a large impact as a volunteer within the USTA and the tennis community – but it is uncommon to achieve and maintain both throughout an adult lifetime.
