2010 Multicultural Grants Now Available

The USTA Multicultural Participation Initiative is made up of a national and sectional volunteer Multicultural Participation Committee and full-time staff members at the national and sectional level. The volunteer committees and the staff work in a coordinated effort to achieve greater multicultural participation all areas of the USTA.

The Multicultural Participation Committee is part of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), a volunteer-based, not-for profit membership organization that works year-round to promote and develop the growth of tennis. The Multicultural Participation Committee (MPC) was formed by the USTA to increase minority participation-particularly in the African-American, Asian, Latino, Hispanic, and Native American communities.

Financial disparity is consistently identified as a significant barrier that prevents multicultural players from getting into the sport.  To help boost tennis participation among aspiring multicultural players, the USTA has created the Multicultural Grants Program, which offers grants to programs, community tennis associations and individual players.

• (NEW!) Pancho González Scholar Athlete Grant 
  In honor of Pancho Gonzalez, the Mexican-American icon who won two U.S. Championships men’s singles titles and whose dedication to the sport of tennis brought together fans from all walks of life, we look to reward a player(s) who works to excel in leading others on and off the court.  The recipient(s) must be training and competing in tournaments year-round.

• Multicultural Excellence Program Grant
  Provide funding to competitive junior development programs that are training youngsters aspiring to achieve national and/or international rankings. Funding will be based on number of players with sectional and national rankings in a specific program. Must be a year-round program that provides a high level of on-court instruction and off-court training opportunities. Must have a history of developing tournament level players.

• The Okechi Womeodu Scholar Athlete Grant Honor the memory, life, and achievements of Okechi Womeodu, who otherwise would have had a very promising future, on and off the court. Reward players who work to excel as much in the classroom as in sports. Must be training and competing in tournaments year-round. Have a history of strong national tournaments results and a minimum GPA of 3.0.

• The Althea Gibson Leadership Application (new) Honor the memory, life, and achievements of this exceptional pioneer who paved the way for millions who followed, reward players who work to excel in leading others on and off the court.

• Multicultural Individual Player Grant for National Competition & Training
  Provide funding to competitive junior players aspiring to achieve national and/or international rankings. Funding will be based on the success level of the player in the previous year. Must be training and competing in tournaments year-round. Have a history of strong national tournament results.
