    Florida Teams at USTA Jr. Team Tennis Nationals Preview

    Four Florida teams will be among the approximately 128 teams and more than 1,000 junior tennis players competing over the next two weekends at the 2009 USTA Jr. Team Tennis 14-and-under and 18-and-under National Championships at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. The events mark the culmination of a year-long series of competitions at the local, state/district, and section levels across Florida and the U.S. The National Championships serve as the crown jewel of USTA Jr. Team Tennis.

    Florida Juniors Win Final Georgia/Florida Jr. Team Tennis Challenge

    USTA Florida juniors successfully defended their title on Oct. 3-4, 2009, at the Georgia/Florida Jr. Team Tennis Challenge, held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. USTA Florida racked up 1,720 points to USTA Georgia's 1,188. "I loved how the Florida teams who were rooting against each other at the Summer Championships were now cheering for each other to win," said USTA Florida Team Tennis Coordinator Michelle Willis.

    Winners Crowned at 2009 USTA Florida Jr. State Closed Doubles

    State championship teams were crowned over the weekend at the USTA Florida Jr. State Doubles Championships, with Daytona Beach hosting the 14, 12, & 10 divisions at the Florida Tennis Center, and Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs hosting the 18 & 16 championships on Sept. 26-28, 2009. The two-day event showcased the top juniors in Florida, and also provided a laid-back and fun atmosphere, including a mixed doubles event for each age division.

    Florida Jrs. Stiteler, Kozlov Make USTA National Teams

    Bradenton's Alexandria Stiteler won the Nike Junior Tour National event in California last weekend, making her one of the four girls that will represent the U.S. at the international competition in the Dominican Republic next month. Stefan Kozlov of Pembroke Pines, Fla., made the boy's squad by winning the 12s age group competition.

    4 Florida Players Sweep Singles-Doubles at USTA Summer Smash in Delray Beach

    Eight boys and girls singles champions, seven from Florida, were crowned over the weekend at the USTA Summer Smash Regional Championships hosted by the City of Delray Beach. More than 1,200 matches were played in boys and girls 12-18 singles and doubles. Four Florida players swept both the singles and doubles titles in their division.

    The USTA announced that hip-hop icon and Grammy Award-winning artist Jay-Z has designed a t-shirt featuring Arthur Ashe that will be sold at the 2009 US Open and online at USOpen.org. The limited edition Jay-Z t-shirt celebrates the USTA National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) network's 40th anniversary, and proceeds from the shirt will benefit the NJTL and the Arthur Ashe Endowment for the Defeat of AIDS. The shirt will be available on-site at the Octagon and the Arthur Ashe Endowment Booth, and online at USOpen.org and ArthurAshe.org.

    The winners' circle had familiar faces today, though there were no repeat winners, as 17 year old Christina McHale swept the USTA Girls' 18 National Championships at the Berkeley Tennis Club and Claremont Resort & Spa...Christina McHale had total control over that baseline battle, hitting winners faster than the eye could see. After shutting out the first set, the New Jersey native had Lauren Embree to 4-1 before the Floridian could even get a break point. She couldn't close the game out, though, and Christina McHale had her title and US Open wildcard at the next one.

    Albo Wins USTA Boys 14 Nationals

    Jake Albo of Plantation, Fla., won the 2009 USTA Boy's 14's Nationals Championships on Sunday in San Antonio, Tex., defeating No. 4 seed Greg Garcia of Poway, Calif., 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Albo, the No. 6 seed, had only dropped one other set the entire tournament through seven rounds, winning 7-6 in the third in the round of 16.

    It was a day full of fun for some local kids, but not quite so entertaining for some struggling seeds at the Girls' 18 Nationals. Kids Day at the Nationals is a tradition in Northern California and this year was no different. Clothed in tee-shirts provided by the college coaches, three groups (Berkeley Youth Alternative, Kids in Motion and Cherrie King Tennis) spent a good part of the day enjoying and learning about tennis. Former Davis Cup Captain (and Olympic Coach) Tom Gullickson was on hand to talk to the kids about getting started with the USTA's Quick Start Tennis program and answer questions they had on Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Serena Williams and some of the other top players he coached.

    The only thing that was dependable today was the weather (warm and sunny yet again) as seeds fell and others struggled to keep their place in the draw at the Berkeley Tennis Club and the Claremont Resort & Spa. There were no problems for the top six seeds as all advanced in straight sets. After defeating Kara Kucin (Belleair, FL), top-seeded Kristie Ahn (Upper Saddle River, NJ) admitted to having "first round jitters" and was glad she was able to get that first match "out of the way so I can move on."

    Laura Augustin of Delray Beach, Fla., was announced this week as one of 10 national winners in the 2009 USTA Arthur Ashe Essay Contest. Agustin, the winner in the girls' 10-and-under category, is a participant in the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) network, the Delray Beach Tennis Patrons, a youth-serving organization that provides tennis and education to develop the character of young people. Augustin and a parent or guardian receives a trip to New York and the 2009 US Open, where they will be guests at the 2009 Arthur Ashe Kids' Day presented by Hess on Aug. 29, 2009.
